One of my favorite recipes every (right up there with Tuna Poke Bowls), this is a light and refreshing recipe for seared ahi tuna that y'all are going to LOVE! We answer all your questions nigh sushi-grade tuna, how to cook it and how to serve information technology. Allow's swoop in!

Does Seared Tuna Need to exist Sushi Grade?

In short – about likely, yes.  BUT, in that location really isn't an official "sushi-grade" that fish can earn by coming together certain standards.  And then, while some stores sell fish with that characterization, it really ways that it is the best, highest-quality fish the shop is offering and they would feel safe eating it raw.  While there is no universal or authorities-regulated "sushi-grade" available for fish, parasitic fish (like salmon) are required to be frozen (at a temp much lower than your own freezer can provide) to kill whatever parasites before being consumed raw.  Additionally, tuna is actually graded by wholesalers.  But, again there is no "sushi-form." Is Seared Ahi Tuna Safety?

I remember when people ask this question they are wondering if by searing the tuna, it somehow makes it safer, even though the inside is even so raw.  In my apprehensive opinion, the answer is very similar to the previous question.  I remember seared tuna is safer than a purely raw slice of tuna, but the inside is yet raw. For that reason, I follow the same guidelines equally discussed higher up before buying raw fish.  The highest quality available (Grade 1 for tuna), employ it right abroad and make sure your cutting board and utensils are super make clean!

Definitely non sharing this with you lot to scare you lot by any means, just I recollect its important to exist a safe/smart consumer of raw fish!  Just educate yourself and you really don't have much to worry near!  Of course, but eat information technology if you feel comfortable!  Me – sushi and seared tuna are seriously some of may favorite foods and I eat them ALL the fourth dimension!!

Where to Find "Sushi Grade" Tuna

I take had skilful luck finding sushi grade tuna at Whole Foods. Otherwise, bank check out your local fishmonger (aka – local person who specializes in selling fish).

How to Make Seared Ahi Tuna

Step One: Flavor your ahi tuna with common salt and pepper. Press sesame seeds into each side.

Step Two: Sear on both sides in a hot cast iron skillet – nigh 30 second (and up to one minute) per side.

Elementary Seared Ahi Tuna Recipe – Your become-to seared ahi tuna recipe!  So simple and ever delicious!


  • (2) 1 inch tuna steaks
  • salt
  • pepper
  • 2 Teaspoons sesame seeds
  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil

  1. Place tuna steaks on plate.
  2. Sprinkle each side with salt, pepper and 1 teaspoon of sesame seeds per side.
  3. Pat seasoning into each side to brand sure they stick.
  4. Accept large cast atomic number 26 skillet and add together oil.
  5. Bring to medium-high heat.
  6. When oil only starts to smoke, place tuna steaks in skillet.
  7. Cook for thirty-45 seconds per side (or up to 1 minute if you just barely want it rare in the centre).

  9. Serve immediately with sauce of choice (run across notes below).

  • Paleo/Whole30: To ensure Whole30/Paleo compliance – use kokosnoot aminos.  For a gluten-free culling, utilise Tamari sauce.  Otherwise, feel complimentary to use soy sauce.
